Wow!  That really drives the point home.

I have found my 80M in sloper tends to reach 100-600 miles so there is definitely a mix going  on even with that non-traditional NVIS config.

If I ever get whisper working I'd like to play with this a lot more

For NVIS I thought the 15Ft was the upper limit?

Yeap, coming soon. Video looks good so far, which they were all easier to program and without software though.

The 380 or 390 was my first choice but there is a new on from Wouxon coming out soon that has a single button switch from analog I to digital.

I only see a simplex use for tactical comms and only worth it at the China prices which are less than or equal to a standard HT ~$150

Really? No use? On a prepper board?  It's encrypted text right out of the box.  That's serious comm security

I have the MPAS system and until recently didn't appreciate fully the versatility of it.  Normally I use the Milwhip mounted to my truck or 5th wheel bumper but I'm currently camped in a valley with several hundred meter high "mountains" on every side.

The milwhip just would not get out on 5W 80M so without movin (in RV park) I put up the wire in a sloper and got a good signal report.

Would a loop have gotten out? I doubt it since elevation seemed to be the real issue.

Speed and connivence when you need it (milwhip) and punch when you can setup the wire.

It's a good system and tunes easily on a ZM-2

I'm glad EZ Mil took STN up on the challenge, even more glad I made the choice I did without knowing all the facts.

General Discussion / Re: What Radios Will I Buy?

Hello Gil,
I never saw if you had insurance to cover the boat?

I'd get the KX3 and the MTR myself, but the KX3 would be my primary as your MTR is likely to be yours?

If that's the case as you found before the KX3 would be wasted and the FT-817 would be a better choice as a second radio.

I'm saving for the KX3 to replace my FT-817 but will keep both for digital NVIS for SHTF

I hope you plan to test the whips in NVIS?

I think you said you didn't get the vehicle whip or didn't want to test it because chameleon doesn't have such a setup?

If you did get it, maybe a showing of a WSPR map competed to the EZ "milwhip" ?  Curious what the loss of performance is for something that would allow moving comms.

OK, I can't get rid of either rig. I went to put the touchkeyer in the HB-1B and found I had broken the 5v regulator!

FT-817 = base unit
HB-1B = portable

Natural gas will be one of the first to go in my area considering the biggest threat is the Cascadia fault.

Having perished this thread  I see a huge reliance on gensets which are temp solutions. I sold off my large 240v genset last year and will be taking Gil's  advice and selling my Honda 2000 for solar panels this year.

Solar and wood are the best alternatives to grid IMO.

I'm applying as a solar installer (after 25 years as an industrial electrician) with a local company so there might be a chance to actually know what I'm doing with solar in the near future

My goal was a portable rig that was easy on batteries and could receive SSB also.

I also wanted 80/40 for NVIS so I got the older model.

I didn't realize that it's not full breakin like the new models which was a selling point for me, but I'm use to partial.

There is no other all in one with all the info this one has.  I looked at the MTR but couldn't get past the single led setup. At least it gives you a freq when you ask, most in this size don't.

Did you fit a keyer into the MTR case?
