General Discussion / Re: Field Day: What to expect?
June 29, 2016, 12:23:01 PM
Always have fun getting set up for field day. Got to try out a new way to shoot wire antennas into the air.

We did log some 10m contacts Sunday morning.

And yes we cooked a whole hog and had live music.  Got to see a nice Go Box with solar panels at the event

It sure is entertaining though. Still does not beat the Great liberty net on 3.950 for the tinfoil conspiracy theories.

I've downsized my shack to a 6U case, with no drawer. The 8U case and drawer weigh 25 lbs by themselves!

The 6U is lighter, and I'm more likely to take it with me in the field. I'm planning a camping trip at a lake less than 10 minutes from the house. Unfortunately, spring break for me and the kids isn't the same time as the wife's, so she has class that week. I'll spend the week camping and anyone who wants to join, can.

A fellow ham is going to help me setup and test a dipole I built that connects to a balun installed in the case. Hopefully, I'll be able to figure out why my reception on HF is so horrible with the same antenna design installed in the attic.

I've been able to use PSK31 on 10, 20, and 40m with the current setup. Sorry for the poor quality pics.

I like the 6u case. Approximately where you plan on camping. Would love to see the IC-7200 operating remotely. Hard to beat a doublet and ladder line.

New To Radio / Re: W1AW

An easy way to use LOTW is to use another logging program an then upload an export to LOTW. Currently I am using http://www.cqrlog.com/ and type in my paper log contacts to that program. Then it is a quick upload to LOTW.

It is a bit of a pain to get the certificate installed for LOTW, but I will give them credit for trying to put some security behind it.

The Chinese Handhelds are a tremendous value and I personally went with a  Wouxun KG-UV6D from http://importcommunications.com/. One of the critical purchase parts is the programming cable. It makes programming the Handheld simple as you can do it via a spreadsheet.

The total purchase of accessories for preparedness and radio come in way under the Big three. They make nice radios, but have not kept up with the price reduction of electronics.
