Welcome to the forum Steve. As Bob pointed out it's sometimes pretty quiet around here, probably more so now during the summer months when everyone is busy with outdoor activities, but rest assured we're here.

Gil, I'll echo Bob's concerns of weight...... been there, done that. You'd be amazed at how much "heavier" a pack becomes every day even as it actually becomes lighter as food is consumed. If you want some near new, high quality backpacking gear, just wait around at the various trail heads along the Appalachian Trail and you can buy it for pennies on the dollar from hikers who quickly discovered they would much rather live without the items they just KNEW they couldn't live without than to continue lugging them on their backs for days on end. Something to consider.

It does sound like an awesome adventure, have fun.

Please do not hesitate to criticize harshly.. I do need feedback to make the videos better, so anything not top notch, please point it out..

QuoteIt's impressive, almost hard to believe, the low SWRs across all Ham bands they achieve.

I would be very surprised if it turned out to be true.

Gil.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised........ remember, a dummy load also has a low SWR across all ham bands.

Technical Corner / Re: I need a bit of machining...
July 05, 2016, 01:56:01 PM
I'd be shocked if local machine shops were unfamiliar with 3/8 NF or that they wouldn't have the tooling for it. While the metric system is the standard almost the entire world over other than the U.S., there has to be literally tons upon tons of equipment in France/Europe that still uses standard SAE fasteners. Regardless, get me some specs and I'll gladly do it, just trying to save you some time and money on shipping something half way around the world.

I'd be more than happy to do it for you Gil, I could whip that out on the lathe in nothing flat. Unfortunately I think the international shipping would far exceed the savings of having it done locally.

Awesome, congratulations. No doubt it's frustrating not having the plethora of QRP kits, parts, information, and infrastructure that you enjoyed state side but I have no doubt you'll overcome those obstacles. I'll be patiently waiting to hear you on the air. 73 de KK0G

Damn Gil, this sucks. I wish I was closer, I'd hop in the plane and start a search for Dagny even though I know the chances of spotting her in such a huge ocean would be slim. Keep your chin up and weather on, I know it's not much consolation but look at the bright side and be thankful for what you do have, things could be a lot worse. Take care my friend, 73 de KK0G.

Morse Code / Re: Do you speak SSB?
November 13, 2015, 08:42:20 AM
Very true Gil. CW and Morse code are so closely tied together that it's easy to confuse the two especially for someone new to the mode, I've even been guilty of it myself a few times.

Along the same lines, a keyer and a paddle are not the same thing; a paddle, or set of paddles, is nothing more than a SPDT (on/off/on) switch. A keyer is an electronic circiut that takes those on/off signals from a paddle and forms evenly timed and spaced dits and dahs.

Technical Corner / Re: BangGood QRP tuner

I have no experience with that particular tuner but it looks to me like it's pretty much the same design as the SOTA tuner in a slightly different package. For only $14 you don't have much to lose, I'd go for it.

Net Activity / Re: Net Activity?
September 13, 2015, 08:03:14 PM
The logistics of a a net that covers such a huge area would be extremely difficult. While I could successfully find a time, band and frequency to communicate with practically every single member here who holds at least a general class license, the fickle nature of propagation makes doing so with everyone simultaneously an exercise in futility at best and near impossible on a regular basis. Regional nets covering smaller areas are very workable as long as you get continued participation, and as Gil pointed out, personal skeds set up directly with other members is another great idea.

Sort of like folks who go "camping", at the "camp ground" at the lake, in their 400 square foot "camper" with dual roof air conditioners, all while hooked up to a 50 amp shore line, running water, and sewer. If that's what floats your boat, have at it, it's a free country, just don't fool yourself into saying you're "camping". :-)

Hello,

I ordered the Pelican 1120 with the front panel frame.. I want to check the size.. If it isn't too big, I might go for it.

Also planned are those AA battery holders: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=BX0027virtualkey15070000virtualkey122-BX0027. I would also add a small speaker and a touch keyer.

Gil.

I like that battery tray, thanks for the link Gil.
