QuoteCW ruled and ran when other systems began to (simulate) no fuel for generators & etc. as would happen in a wide area emergency. No computers, interface boxes and more needed.

It's funny how this is so obvious to those who have tried it in the field. Others need simulations... It's not hard to imagine that a generator will quickly run out of gas, or that eventually the gas will go bad. Soon or later only QRP rig will remain.

QuotePower levels were anywhere from modest to ridiculously low.

100mW!

QuoteWould be great to have it all on a map eventually!

Turns out, I'm a programmer :o

WRRA? Word Radio Relay Association?

Suggestions?

Gil.

WARRIOR: World Amateur Radio Relay International Organic Routing
CWW: CW Web

RETRO Net: Resilient Emergency Telegraphy Radio Operators Network... CQ RETRO... play on using old school operating systems - that still work.

I was not aware of the Cascadia Rising exercise - brilliant information and thank you for sharing with us.

+1 RETRO NET

Calling CQ RN on CW will do too :-)

Should the data base map not show which stations are available on battery power up to a few days, for months (alternative recharge sources) as I suspect that will then show there is very little (or a lot less) capability and many skeds/nets may totally break? Also this will need to be printable as it won't be much good if computers are off, net is down.

That's a good idea - I was initially thinking that contacts should have to be made using off grid power, but we want people to participate and any emergency, bar a total collapse, will leave the grid up in some/most regions - so there's no point in excluding people.

Simple map legend would suffice:

Green    =  Battery + Solar/Wind
Blue      =  Battery + Generator/Car
Yellow  =  Battery only
Red       =  Mains only

I'd say that members should have the ability to operate on batteries and charge them without grid power, as a condition for joining.

That makes great sense, rules me out for now but gives us additional incentive to get ready.

I strongly second this approach, that is very good idea, otherwise it will be too small and discouraging. Having these colors shows you where you stand and is a motivation to move up! I'm then BLUE but need to get to GREEN. I hope your idea is adopted. I don't think the RED should be excluded at all, and it will help us to have these categories as we then also know which will fall off with the power outage.

Changing my votes:

-1 WARRIOR World Whatever
-1 CWW CW Web

So we thus far have:

CWW (CW Web): 1 vote
WRRA (Wor(l)d Radio Relay Association): 1 vote
RETRO Net (Resilient Emergency Telegraphy Radio Operators Network): 2 votes

Any other suggestions or votes? Propaganda Publicity Plug: "C'mon, vote RETRO Net, you know it makes sense!"

RETRO works for me.  It says what it means.

de RadioRay  ..._  ._

Ps.  I joined RadioRelay International and have been monitoring their nets. Very efficient: ON - pass traffic - off.

CQ retro, CQ RN...

I like.

Did a bit of reading to catch up with this thread.  Interesting.

I see Dr. Kate (the earthquake specialist out of Cal Tech, now retired) is associated with the Radio Relay International, not surprised there at all.  She is really enthusiastic for cw and traffic handling (attended one of her classes a while back).  Have to do a bit of monitoring.  I know Kate is local to my region, so shouldn't be too hard to find them.

There is a LOT of information so far embedded in the associated links, and posted in the thread itself, interesting thread, thanks for starting it! I've got a lot more reading to do to properly catch up!

Hey underhill, welcome back!  It's been a while.  Stick around. :D

Looks a likely winner. Are we OK for the colour codes as suggested above on the map?

Gil you've got some serious programming work ahead!
