Is there a reason to have a TNC separate from the transceiver?

I?ve got my Kenwood TH-F6 HT and I really like it.  In fact, I like it to the point that I might have solidified brand loyalty with Kenwood.

So now I?m looking for the next radio.  I want a mobile so that I can mount it into a go box and also use it as a base.  I like the TS-480HX but that does not have UHF/VHF bands so as much as I like it, I think I?ll have to wait on that one and focus on one that will be more useful for local incidents and training.

So, that took me to TM-D710 or the V71. I want the TNC that the 710 has built in and I would be saving money, space and power by having it in one unit.

The only minus I can see is that a separate TNC could be used with another radio should the need arise.  I?m thinking that the pluses out weigh the minus.

Am I missing something?
