I just loved this, it was great the other guy could copy morse with ease, just goes to show what can be done with a little lateral thinking.

As previously stated :- These two women were not sailors and the what is seen in the reports demonstrates they had neither the training, skill or preparation for undertaking such a voyage at sea.

What is worthy of such reports, is that it promotes both discussion and thought into the question of,  How would I have done it differently.

Those of us who have sailed at sea, will tell you that they take all but the so called Kitchen Sink !!! In multiple backup numbers of everything , just in case !!!

Many publications exsist on the subject of Ocean Sailing, but if I had to recommend just one , it would be :- One Hand for YOURSELF and One for the Ship.  Written by Tristan Jones  an ocean going single handed Sailer

The book will be a good read also for none sailers, as it will inform and provoke thought on self survival  and preparedness and what is the minimum equipment to have on hand.

After a bit more thought. I may add here how I would have done it differently,  in the meantime what are your thoughts, lets all learn from this event.

I shall keep my ear to the ground, in order to determine more of their story.
I think I heard that they had thee months worth of canned food abord, so they were obviously expecting a long trip.
Even in the south pacific navigation by the Sun is straight forward for those with training, and even equipped with a plastic simple lifeboat sextant, reaching a land mass like New Zeland would not be so difficult.
The moral here is.   Don't go to sea without one and some simple training.

Hi
All information thus far would suggest that these two were not sailors and were ill equiped to undertake such an adventure.

Total lacking in any basic navigation skills, demonstrated by their eventual pickup point.
To get my ticket, I had to take exams for celestial navigation and extensive practical navigation skills.

It is of course possible to sail the Oceans today without all the electronic aids, Lord Nelson did it ,as did many others, but it would be a bit foolhardy not to have a least the Emergency sat beacons available today onboard.  I would think any sailor worthy of the name would have been so disappointed at the lack of equipment he  would of found on their boat.

Hello Gil
Mine will be for 80 metrs

Need to work out a decent antenna for 80 , while I wait for the radio,
Did have a dipole, but that was not very successful.
So will try with an end fed, and use my ZM 2 atu to begin with

QuoteThat T1 was a bear alright, but I got it wound and installed. Sorry about your missing parts, that's a bummer. Here's mine.

Good work Joel, your T1 looks much better than mine but no way 68 turns was going to look good.

Now I need to put up that 8010P end-fed on the roof...

QuoteMine is serial number 1668 and should be sent mid November. Excited

Which band Steve?  Mine will be for 80 metres

Gil,
I already own and use the MTR 5b, but still trying to find the pefect battery pack for this radio, I am very nervious about going over the ( highlighted in RED ) 12 volts dc.  Even the 8 x 1.5 AA cells when new are over. And my re-chargeable 1.2 volt cells only give 10.6 in the 8x pack

CB / Re: Palomar Digicom 100 SSB transceiver

Hi

I too, own a couple of small CB radios together with mag mount antennas, I used to keep them in my camper, for those rare occasions when others used them on rallies etc,
I can hand out one to a friend , so we can keep in touch, whilst on camping trips , very useful sometimes.
Just for the nostalgic reasons I shall hang on to them I'm sure

Ray, great, great info.  Thanks!

I'm having a hard time coping with the idea of having about $1,000 tied up in a little box that fits in the palm of my hand LOL.

The KX2 has been on my wish list for some months now , but the quote from cockpitbob, sums up my reservations exactly.
I ask my self the question,  do I realy need this radio or is it just a wish for another shiny toy ?

Like my KX1 I have had to put it into a Pelican case, because of its fragile construction, and non water resistance ,for rugged use in the field. I would have to do the same with the KX2 !!!

I have owned an FT 817 for 3 years, use it with a couple of 7Ah gel batteries , one charge gives a couple of hours use if transmitting and 4 hrs if just listening.

Two things I do not like about the radio, first, its not a great CW platform, I have the accessory filters fitted, but still the bandwidth is too big to cut out the QRM from nearby stations, making copy difficult most of the time.
My two Elecraft radios are perfect for CW work which is the reason for considering a new KX2 but for pease of mind for rugged use in the field , maybe I should search for a K1.

My sleepness nights continue, until I can make the decision !!

Hi,
Sorry to hear that Gil about the delivery problems, at least you will not be too far ahead of me in the build timming !!!
I need to wait till middle of November I think before mine. is shipped, then plus two/three weeks before arrival.

I live about 40 miles inland of La Rochelle , near Vovent  85120

I was hoping eventually that we make contact on the airwaves, a perfect distance for trialing regional distance comms.

I have much in common with you I think ( Flying , sailing,  radio, ) so it may be some time before we run out of things to chat about !!!

Antennas / Re: New Elecraft AX1 Antenna.
October 20, 2017, 03:57:34 PM
Hello

I have a Miracle Antenna, this unit consists of a collapsable whip of about 1.5 m , with a tuning dial,
It is supposed to match any thing from 3 to 30 mhz.
It can connect direct to the back of the. Ft 817 via the so 230 socket, which I think it was designed for.
All looks familiar to the Elecraft ax1
