Digital Modes / Re: Signalink USB and WINMOR as a mode

I give up. Everything I read uses the Signalink as the interface and not the West Mountian PNP or something like it. I may end up picking up the Signalink and ditching the PNP

Yep.. See: http://www.earchi.org/92011endfedfiles/Endfed6_40.pdf
I built it, worls like a charm. it does need a tuner.they have other models: http://www.earchi.org/proj_homebrew.html
My PAR end-fed is similar, and works without a tuner, 1.1:1 SWR.

I like end-feds, much easier to hang on a tree.. I shoot a wire up with a slingshot...

Gil.

I like end feds myself. I have a 10, 20 and 40 by Radiowavz. I have made great contacts with those on single bands. I might have to buy one of those from EARCHI and set it up as a vertical for the house.

Quotei am hearing that with a 4:1 balun and a ground plane i can ling up a random wire, so i am researching that.

You can make an end-fed with a 9:1 unun. No ground plane...

Gil.

Random wire and be able to tune it up?

I decided to go all in on an 857 and get rid of my 817 and packer amp. I though i would get out more with the 817 and it has sat in my shack and i have not taken it mobile. I decided the 857 would be a better fit for me in the shack, mobile and portable. Got a N/S orientated dipole set up in my yard right now and thinking about hooking up a random wire. I got a LDG Z11ProII and i am hearing that with a 4:1 balun and a ground plane i can ling up a random wire, so i am researching that.

other than that i am reloading and storing food.

Ruff dude, Ruff

Got the mode right last night and the radio was able to show power going out. Was not able to make a connection but i think it was due to the time of night and band. I started reading that primer you sent and will try uninstalling RMS i have and re-installing following the directions.

I will have to take a look at the USB mode, I thought you just had to change the mode to USB
Yep, needs to be in a data mode.  Most common one encountered as a default is RTTY, then PSK or some such, and the Yaesu's let you also select User Defined data mode with either Upper or Lower Sideband injection. You'll find it.
:)

I think i figured it out and would explain why my radio didn't put out any power or key the receiving station cause i had it set to SSB USB, no voice no output, but if it was in digital it would have keyed.

Edit: When my radio transmits a off and on is that a handshake process for the receiving radio?

Dipole is a single wire with jumpers cut in at 10-20-40 and full length 80.

I will have to take a look at the USB mode, I thought you just had to change the mode to USB

I will tone it down for my next try. I am located in northeastern MA and there is a station 38K from me the operates 0-23. My antenna is a homebrew dipole oriented N to S.

Anyone had any luck using a west mountain radio PNP? I am able to successfully do psk31 and i can get RMS to activate the radio but it won't connect to a station. Trying to do it all on 20m, maybe i got to try 40?

think it would be possible to digitize a list of racers and send it by PSK versus calling all the names out individually.

Heh, back in 1979, I did just that.  It was the first year for the hams to support the 24 hour horse riding and human running race through the mountains of Shenandoah, Page, and Frederick counties in Virginia.

Was it digital back then?  You bet.  RTTY.

The ride/run officials were delighted to have a hard copy of who was where but man-oh-man, those Model 28 Teletypes were a stinker to heft up into the Jeep and unload at a horse barn in Front Royal.  After the race, do it all over again, in reverse.

The one thing we couldn't guarantee back then was accuracy of transmission.  Today, with Winmor and certain of the NBEMS modes, we can do that.

You just dated yourself. Were you able to run that mobile?  ;D

OK, I'm in.  I just ordered my Christmas present.  A Signalink USB with cable for my FT-857.

I'm really itching to play with Winmore.  My 14 year old son has his General but hasn't done much.  I think digital modes will be enough like texting and emailing that it could get him back into the hobby.  Also, on my bucket list is EME and most people seem to be using digital modes because of their ability to work incredibly weak signals.

Just got my 817 hooked up to the computer for PSK. After lots of frustration i was able to figure it out. Recently during an EMCOM meeting at my club the president showcased the possibilities of using digital modes over the repeater. There are a lots of digital modes and they all seem to have there benefit based on data you want to transmit. PSK125 (???) for example uses a higher bandwidth but can get a lot of data transmitted in a short amount of time. My club supports lots of local activities like races and think it would be possible to digitize a list of racers and send it by PSK versus calling all the names out individually.

Tech here. Just haven't been able to force myself to sit down and learn more.  I've tried but just can't remember all the material.  My goal is upgrade to extra though. Just having a difficult time doing it.

Have you seen hamstudy.org?

Great free site that has a great way of learning and testing the material.
