Title: APRS
Post by: madball13 on March 07, 2013, 07:44:58 AM
Just got a HT and got a mobile on the way that does APRS.

Anyone else use it?

Even if my HT had it, I would not use it. Why broadcast your position to anyone in the world? It would be a great tool for robbers, keeping track of the house owner while ransacking his house..

It's a little more than that and you have the ability to shut off the positioning beacon and just glean the info.

Sure. I don't know much about it. Probably a gimmick for emcom types... In some cases, it might be useful, but I have doubts. Seems like a solution looking for a problem. My opinion is biased tough. I only like the simplest solutions. APRS also means a big price increase. You can buy two radios for the price of one enabled APRS one. Exchanging location information is easy, you press the PTT button and you say "Where are you?"  ::)

Could be good if the repeaters are down to let you know when someone is in simplex range.  As long as you know when to use it and when to turn it off, then there's nothing to worry about.

Hey Buster -

You're quite right in that APRS has a 'digi-peat' mode so that you can repeat through more than one APRS node.  There are both VHF/UHF and HF APRS frequencies. There was some significant research into APRS for it's intended use and by 'preppers' as a just in case mode.  The gist was that for HF radio,  WINMOR did so much more using the the same investment in equipment, that APRS would be less effective for their intended purpose.  Your mileage may vary, but if you're running a radio and battery anyway, it's more data for your thoughts.

Ps.  For area VHF/UHF APRS without having position reports might be very handy. I don't like to advertise my position, movements and driving speeds . . .    ; ^ )   though cellphones already do that as a governmental requirement - and more.     :o
