Technical Corner / Re: mcHF QRP Tranciever

I tabled my build until RF board hits version 5. Fried a couple traces and had problems with some of the mods. No worries though. I'd do the version 4 again, but I'd take my time this time.

Morse Code / Re: Learning Morse on Android devices.

Try an app called Morse toad as well. Simple and fun

From what I've read and seen I can comfortably work all HF depending on the length of wire and feed point. I'm going to try a 30 - 10 with the wire I have on hand and if it works well I'll rework for 80-10. Maybe like a variable length end-fed style as its easier to pack.

I'm building a delta loop out back as the random wire in the attic really isn't functional. I'm considering using a couple of 30amp Anderson power connectors to connect each end of the wire to the balun as I'd like this setup to be as portable as possible. I plan on running no more than 150W through this setup and am using 14 or 16 awg for wire. Thoughts?

Thanks for the post! I saw this posted somewhere EPs, but forgot where. Very interesting.

It does psk with a single sound card really well since you can plug in the headphones or listen to the onboard speaker. USB is still being implemented.  CAT function is also being implemented currently. Touchscreen additions were pushed into one of the past few weeks dev build. Awaiting more features before pushing to master branch and production.

I should do a writeup on my experience in building one now that I can actually transmit. The power is down to 360 mA with lcd brightness at full, but I'm not sure what the draw is on minimum, or when auto blanking is enabled. There are numerous modifications to the current 0.4 UI and RF boards that both improve and decrease power draw. I'm still troubleshooting a problem with my TX fets, but receive is purely beautiful. Look for a rewview from me in approximately a month or so. In addition, there is an aluminum case that someone in Sweeden (think that's the state) is selling. It's custom made for the mcHF.  I should have mine in a few days so that'll be in the review as well.

Antennas / Re: Dummy Load

Needed a quick dummy load before and used a pickle jar, water, and salt. Works great. Google salt water dummy load.

One quick solution for the small parts for those who don't want to hot-air is to dab a bit of solder paste on a corner and tack the chip in place. Then you can more easily drag solder the rest of the sides without the chip sliding. After losing g my MCU and frying  some traces on one of my mcHF boards I was shown this little technique.

General Discussion / Re: Intro and mcHF
July 16, 2015, 12:22:56 AM
Lol. U mention Boy Scouts. That opens up another avenue for intro. I'm my sons Den leader, he just got his tiger badge. I'm also big into backpacking and hiking. In addition, I test backpacking gear for free and were always looking for more testers. I'm working with my troop leaders here on a program to get the kids free gear by testing as well. The program is BackpackGearTest.org. through them, companies send us gear, we give honest, non-sponsored (unlike backpacker magazine style) reviews and try to find as many problems as possible for the companies to actually fix, then we keep the gear at the end.

Anyway, on a phone now and thumbs already tired. Sorry if I wasn't supposed to post links. Anyone can join though so its not for just scouts. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll elaborate more when I have a full keyboard. Nice to meet you.

General Discussion / Intro and mcHF
July 15, 2015, 09:43:26 PM
Hello all. I've been lurking for a while reading all I could. Searching through Tapatalk for QRP led me here. I don't talk much, but will input on subjects that I have some knowledge.

I work for a career fire  department in western Kentucky. I've been EMS/Fire in  some form for 22 years.  I got my Tech class license almost two years now,but fell out of it for a while. I talk 2m & 70cm at work all the time so there was no novelty for me that I thought I would have.  I've been actively working for General now for a could months, and plan to have it soon. So I've never talked on HF yet, never had an elmer, and am learning from scratch.

My drive for General class came when I Googled QRP backpacking radio and found the Softrock SDR. But needing a laptop wasn't reasonable for me.... Then I found M0NKA's mcHF project and just had to build one.  Well, I built one over the past 3 weeks and have it "working", but I don't have an antenna and the three I've tried making all give me the same results.... A waterfall filled with static every the 5 hz or so. No worries, I'll get a known working antenna from a friend later this week; at least I hope so, not being able to talk is killing me. I've heard that with the mcHF, solder issues are usually the problem, so having a known good antenna will help me troubleshoot.

Anyway, my post was twofold, I'd seen someone here post about the mcHF before and figured I'd introduce myself and let everyone know I've built one if anyone has questions. In addition, I like the discussions here and wanted to intro so when I do eventually make a comment, you guys won't be thinking "who's this noob"! Also, typing on a tablet bites, laptop is updating now..... I usually don't make this many grammatical errors, but am too lazy to fix em all.
