I dont think there is anything wrong asking the question you did - I believe Gil had once considered setting up a specific area of the forum for this type of thread - i don't think he has done so yet.

I Found this link for FT-857's on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/sis.html?_kw=Yaesu+FT-857D+Amateur+Radio+All+Band+Transceiver

And this one for FT-817ND's:

http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p4069.m570.l1313&_nkw=FT-817ND&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Some folks may have an aversion to buying amateur radio equipment/transceivers on eBay...but that's where I bought my HF rig (albeit mine is an older model Ten Tec, it was also heavier)...a LOT of radios are sold on eBay

...besides, mine worked right out of the box!

Anyway, thought I'd offer a starting point!

Classifieds on qrz.com, eham.net and swap.qth.com

That's a tough choice between an 817 and 857.  I have an 857 but sometimes wish I had the 817 for portable ops.  The 857, as you know, is a lot heavier and it draws about 0.7A just listening.
