Another advantage of Morse instead of voice is the built-in ability to accurately produce a written message to avoid confusion.

I have the Uniden BCD436HP.  It was expensive but well worth it.  It will even decode P25 radio traffic.  It also has a close call feature that alerts you it someone is transmitting nearby.

Update:

He is now using Faraday cloth with it sewn into seatbelt fabric. So the antenna is fully collapsible and rolls up into a small area for backpacking.

When he has enough he will sell them.

New too radio.just got my gmrs license and looking for a hf,vhf,uhf scanner till I get my ham figured out.
Any suggestions?
I'm way off grid far from "Walmart"
