Messages - Pensioner Prepper

Hi
Had mine for about one year. Can't say I have anything bad to say about it. Got to be a absolute deal for the money.
I can that I have found the tuner to be a dream. Right up there with my KX3
Probably true to say that it comes into its own for portable operations which I believe it excels.
Hope this is of some use.

CB / Re: Is it wise to buy a CB

Indeed yes I do know what you mean.

I have to mention that in the Uk that the Radio powers that be tend to leve you alone. The big no no would be if your signal was interfering with commercial or emergency frequencies, then expect the big stick and rightly so.

That said I am surprised at the number of Uk YouTube videos whose authors are showing that they clarely do break every rule in the book. Can't say that I would publicly like to take that chance.

CB / Is it wise to buy a CB

Firstly I am a big fan of CB but, always a but, not necessarily a fan of CB radios. Why, well generaly speaking when compared to Ham radio equipment a CB radio can be found wanting. I will give you an example. I have a President Grant 2 CB radio which I was using to have an interesting conversation with a fellow prepper on USB. Sudenly my noise floor went from 0 to over 9 making further communication impossible. In the UK we have 80 CB channels to play with and have FM AM USB and LSB. The noise was over the whole 80 channels and over all modes. This persisted until daylight the next day when 0 noise level returned.

This was the clue as I was operating from a commercial caravan site. For the benifit of the residents the site owners have installed outside lights which are triggered to come on depending on light levels.
Right all well and good. The next night I switched on the CB and waited for the lights to come on.

You have guess it, lights on noise level 9 unusable. Then I had a thought, would this affect my Ham equipment. Pulling out my trusty FT - 897 and tuning to the same CB channel and using the same antenna the 897 was quite as the proverbial church mouse.

What does this tell you about shielding in CB equipment. I do have a few other CBs to try but I strongly suspect they will yield similar results.

My conclusion is that a case may be made that it is perhaps better to buy a ham HF set, have it opened up, which I feel all prepper radios should be and use that in preference to a dedicated CB set.

I know there are legal considerations but after all we are Preppers.

General Discussion / Re: Death By Microprocessor

Thanks for that Ray very interesting. I do Morse practice every day when I can. I would not say that I am good in any shape or form but I am good enough to get by with a patient station should I need to.

I have to say I like the sound of Morse, sort of relaxing.
Take good care old friend.

I remember when I was about 12 years old monitoring Top Band on a 19 set. Very active band in those days and some stations were mobile. Now that's a challenge and a half.

Did wonder what the working conditions were of both stations and if you have made a ssb contact since. Larry

Well I got a Yaesu FT-726R all mode 2m/70cm/6m transceiver and my 2m Halo has just been delivered. Give it a week or two to get all up and running and I will be good to go. That is if anyone is on 2M SSB.

That is the good thing about having  a Ham wife, if all else falls I can drive off 40 odd miles and talk to her on the car's FT-857 and a portable 2m beam antenna. No money wasted.

Net Activity / Re: Preppers Calling Frequency.

I will give it a try. Will sit on 3.685 for a week and see if is used for any regular nets. Will let you know. Have been monitoring 7185 USB and putting out the occasional call with no response thus far.
There being no NIVS on 40M it is hard to work inter G on this frequency. Larry

Net Activity / Re: Preppers Calling Frequency.

I wondered if anything yet has been desided for a 80m Prepper calling frequency. If not I will throw my hat into the ring and suggest 3.675 USB for UK inter G and parts of mainland Europe.

My group would be willing to do some testing to see if this frequency is suitable.

Thanks for that Ray. Yes I agree 40m NVIS is a no no for us in the Uk.

Oftern think of Prepper communications as ripples on a pond. The most important stuff happens on your doorstep. In my case that is in my Village with my Group and Uhf covers that well. As the ripples go outwards I think of 2m FM, 80m Ground wave, 2m SSB, 80m NVIS and on up to 40 and 20m mainly for information gathering.

A Radio Prepper and a Radio Ameture are two different horses me thinks.

Hi Gil

Have subscribed to your YouTube channel and really like the idea of a Prepper's HF frequency. Practicing morse every day now, I do struggle with it but overall I am sure it is worth the effort.

I am an active member of Uk Raynet in North Anglia and have been for over 10 years.

Basically a homestead sort of Prepper with a small group. We all live in the same little village and have our own Radio UHF network. As we all live within 1/2 km of each other PMR/FRS work well for us.

Best wishes Larry.
