Technical Corner / Re: Good deal on RG-174

Maybe not so good of a deal. I just opened it and its only about 22ft in length. Completely not what was advertised!

Antennas / 22g Polystealth?
July 07, 2016, 10:35:22 PM
I ordered an LNR MTR Endfed a while back which came with 22g polystealth. My cats recently chewed through about 2-3 ft near the matchbox. I've not been able to find any distributors who have the 22g. I'd rather not downsize to the 26g if possible. Any suggestions?

Any update on this I'm very interested in seeing your choke. I'm going to try the 9:1 unun design myself with the new radio to see performance, but am worried about not having a counterpoise since I only plan on having about 25 ft of rg174 as a feed line.

Technical Corner / Good deal on RG-174
July 06, 2016, 02:29:12 PM
I ordered this the other day and figure'd I'd pass along the link. It's 100' RG-174 with SMB connectors attached to each end. I'm not so sure I want to keep the SMB connectors attached on mine as I need BNC, but I figured for the price I couldn't go wrong. $4.99 plus free shipping. Not bad since wireman rg-174 is $0.23 per foot.

General Discussion / Re: Field Day: What to expect?

One trick I use is the type of line. Don't use monofilament. Buy some good heavy weight spiderwire threads. It doesn't hold the spool shape and doesn't tangle nearly as bad as mono. I just lay the spool beneath the tree, have a 1.5 oz weight on the end, and let her fly. The spiderwire feeds off the spool nicely and when I pull it out of the tree I can just let it lay on the ground without having to worry about it coiling into a ball.

Antennas / Re: Need antenna suggestions

Honestly, no. This is all still fairly new to me. I usually use an endfed with portable battery power so I don't have these issues. I'll look online and find some resources on checking for noise and proper grounding.

Antennas / Need antenna suggestions
June 26, 2016, 11:25:37 PM
I need a new setup... I just don't know what it is right now.

I currently have a ~285ft delta loop. It is suspended approximately 50 ft high with the lower corners being approximately 15 ft off the ground. The feed point is in the middle attached to a 4:1 balun. I believe it's fed with RG58, but I'm at work and can't check for sure. I use a MFJ-971 200W "qrp" tuner at this time. My problem is significant noise. Unless the signal is loud and strong, I get about s7 - s9 on the noise floor.

I'd rather have only one antenna, but based upon what I'm wanting to accomplish I understand that may not be the best route. This is what I'd like to accomplish; NVIS on 80 & possibly 40, DX capabilities when the bands are nice, I wouldn't mind having something mounted in the attic, but the attic's height is only about 12-15 ft, 200w max is all I really need at this time.

I'm open to all suggestions, so feel free to suggest anything.

This looks like stereotypical Kentucky folk. Then I thought you all would think the same.... So, as someone who is from Kentucky, I'm here to make sure you understand that we're not all this way. Some of us are actually sane.

Description:
After building two mcHF radio's, and parting one out to help a friend, I've decided to sell the entire setup to fund other radio projects. The mcHF is a small, home-brewed amateur radio project. Firmware is released as open-source and most project files are released as well. Some of the features that the mcHF has are:
Standalone and compact embedded transceiverContinuous RX coverage 2-30 MHz0.5 - 15W output powerCW, SSB, AM and FM – transmit and receive. CW sidetone out without transmitting
300/500 Hz CW up to 10 kHz "extra wide" filters for SSB/AM reception and adjustable passband centeringAlso implemented are additional filtering options such as LPF & BPF specific filtering. Each selectable in all bands & modes.
SSB/AM Transmit Speech processorDSP noise reductionDSP automatic notch filterNoise Blanker & PeakBass & Treble specific values for better usability.SWR, PWR, and S meter.Split VFO operation
Spectrum scope with multiple color & display options
Waterfall Display with configuration options for speed, freq width, and more
Optional touchscreen integration is possible.Cat control & USB Audio functionality

General Discussion / Re: Ultra Portable Radios.

I'm with you Gil on the small size versus small power. I want something that I can take anywhere, hence the prepped part of our forum. As a fire / rescue guy, I very much understand the need for a portable, real-world emergency comm setup. It is one of the reasons that I built the m0nka radio; small package, big possibilities.

Seeing the new KX2 has me drooling though. I simply have to make this part of my EDC bag. Now all I have to do is find the funds... no small task on a city government employee's paycheck.

I'll sell ya both my m0nka mcHF kits. One working fully, second rf board 99% populated, second ui board only has CPU. Just needs a case, or two if u decide to finish the second one.

General Discussion / Re: What Radios Will I Buy?

Get the m0nka mcHF and give it a go. Its a great little radio in my opinion. Much easier to use than my 857d is. I plan on rebuilding my RF board in the next few months since I fried some traces hacking new mods on.

Can someone recommend a good resource on learning how to properly use a radio? I'm still fairly new and without an elmer, learning on my own is slow going... I started playing around with the M0nka mcHF which was great as there weren't a lot of features to get lost in. After purchasing a Yaesu 857d, I'm a bit lost. I'm looking for info on what the Att function is, or dnf versus DNR, etc. The yaesu manual is a bit technical and while it describes the individual features, it's not very user friendly in the "this feature works like this" area.
