Are you on in the evenings?
I'm not on a regular schedule right now, so I'm on when I can get away from family duties right now. I haven't been on HF enough to have a favorite band or anything, so I just scan around, listen and try to learn what to do and what to say. What band do you like to spend your time on?

Much like you, I don't have any particular band that is a favorite.  I'm usually listening after dark so I find myself on 80 and 40 meters a lot and 20 meters as well.  I've still got training wheels so I'm not ready to call CQ or contest or the like.  I think at this point I kind of prefer to "pre-set up" something so I know I'm talking to someone that might be a little forgiving of my screw ups.   ::)

Welcome aboard!

I'm a newbie myself and would love to make some contacts.  I'm all the way up to a grand total of 2!

Are you on in the evenings?

Tactical Corner / Re: HF/Digital Station in a Box!

That's going to be quite a station in a box.  I see you've got it set up for 120v to the power supply.  Any plans for battery backup of any kind?

BTW, PM sent.

Surprisingly, that's exactly how I had you pictured!  Except for the hair of course...   :D

BTW, nice camelsfoot.    :o

As I wrote in my introductory post, I'm very new to ham and I'm on the steep end of the learning curve (or is that the deep end?).  So right now, I've got pretty limited knowledge and tools.

Fast forward to last weekend I decided to go out to the ranch to do some chores, hunting, chillaxing etc.  I threw the Yaesu FT-8900 in the truck and off I went.  I hadn't heard much on 10 meter previously but it was pretty lively that weekend.  Anyhow, listening to 29.600, a CQ comes in pretty strong.  At that point, I have yet to use the PTT button.  Even back in the big city listening to 2m and 70cm with the HT, I haven't done anything but listen and learn.

So I answer this station from my place outside BFE.  I actually talked to him briefly!  He never could pick up my call sign because my signal was weak.  I've got a Diamond CR-8900 on my truck and my mobile rig  only puts out 50 watts max.  Of course, I don't have internet or much else for that matter for comms out in the sticks so I had to wait to get back to town to look him up.   Enschede, Netherlands!!  By the German border.  5500 miles.  Holy crap!  This stuff works!

Do you have a General Class License?

There is a 10 meter repeater near Dallas Tx that I can hear - in Pennsylvania when the band is open.

The reason why I asked if you have a General Class License is because a Technician does not have Privileges on 10 meters FM...

Even the CB'rs knows that the antenna needs to be almost 9 feet ( around 104 inches) long to work on 10 meters...

No, I have an Extra.
I have picked up the 10m repeater out of the Catskills but never heard a peep out of the Dallas or Houston repeaters.
I use a Diamond 8900 quadband antenna made for my Yaesu 8900 but it's nowhere near 9 feet.  Maybe the CB'rs ought to tell Diamond how to make an antenna.  Until then, I'll defer to their expertise.

Did anyone have any luck with the net last night?  I tuned around but never did pick up anything but a couple guys at 3.8175.

I'm curious as to the geographic location of the net control because I wasn't picking her up well at all.  I'm running a Chameleon Hybrid for an antenna but at the height I've got it, it's probably more useful for NVIS.

I "Heard" the net last night. I only heard a few stations and after 45 minutes the distinctive female net control voice was recognized but not identifiable. I get a ton of noise on my dipole at the QTH.

I had the exact same experience last night.  I could hear the female voice but too much noise for the net to be useful.  I wish I could stick up a big old antenna on a tower but I'm HOA restricted.   :(

I was listening to 3818 last night but didn't hear much going on.  I'll try again next week and tune around a little.  Thanks.
