Morse Code / CW Academy
March 12, 2015, 03:05:11 PM
Anyone ever dealt with CW Academy?

http://www.cwops.org/cwacademy.html

I signed up and looking forward to starting. cockpitbob convinced me to buy a kit to build a pico keyer and now i just need a set of paddles. Anyone of a suggestion of a set of paddles that are somewhat portable and not too pricey, say ~$60 give or take?

Technical Corner / Soldering Iron
March 03, 2014, 03:16:54 PM
Can anyone please recommend a decent soldering iron for electronics. I would like to build a TNC for a raspberry pi and would like something small and handheld. I'm a big fan of cheap and simple if that exists for irons.
Thanks for the help.

Morse Code / Took the plunge
February 04, 2014, 07:53:32 AM
Started working in learning CW last night. I now have it set in my calendar to go in the shack fire up the laptop and work on the LCWO lessons. At the beginning of the lesson 1, K-M, i almost gave up, the letters were coming out faster that i could write. I was tempted to quit or slow the speed down but i remember Gil saying his biggest mistake was slowing down. I stuck it out and after doing lesson 1- 8 times my copy rate was at 80%.

Anyone got any tips? Should i just plug through all 40 lessons and see where i'm at?

Antennas / 160M
January 27, 2014, 01:34:39 PM
I've been curious about adding 160 to the QTH and thinking about an end-fed sloper in a N/S config. The feed point would be about 10 feet up on the side of my house and the wire would continue up the hill in the back to whatever large tree i can get some paracord up and over.

Anyone have any luck with 160 w/o getting them 200 feet in the air?

Net Activity / W1T lighthouse activation
August 03, 2013, 12:31:39 PM
I'll be participating in a lighthouse activation this weekend. I'll be kayaking out to the island today at 6 and I will be staying overnight. If you go to caara.net there is a list of freqs we will be on. I post some pics here of the trip later Sunday or Monday.

Pretty cool endeavor. Seems like a steal for $250.

Antennas / Mobile dual band
February 21, 2013, 10:52:47 PM
What do you guys have for a mobile dual band?

I had a mag mount that blew off and a through the glass dual band that fell off.

I picked up a Breedlove stake pocket mount for my truck with a UHF connector and looking for some recommendations.

Thanks!

Digital Modes / PSK31 7K miles
February 04, 2013, 11:05:55 AM
Made a contact from Mass to Kenya on 20m PSK31 this weekend. I was pretty impressed with the ability of PSK31 to be able to do that with 30W. I know CW is the way to go, maybe someday.

Technical Corner / SWR Meter goes haywire.
January 22, 2013, 03:09:44 PM
I just picked up an 857 and a Z11Pro Tuner and i have a 1/2 wave 80M dipole with jumpers cut in for 10-20-40. I decided to do some testing with my tuner and with the dipole set at 20M i switch to 40, change the radio setting to PKT and key up. The radio flashes SWR as the tuner goes about finding a match. It eventually does but i notice my SWR meter is completely haywire, both needles pointing to the ceiling.

Anyone have an ideas?
