I agree with Paul. The cost and complexity can be enormous. To fly the plane, you need to see the horizon too.. You would probably crash a few before getting the hang of it.. Think really carefully about this before spending your money.. If you go ahead, get a regular small model and fly that first.. There are small electric planes you can easily attach a wireless camera to.. Range is limited, but it might give you an idea.. You don't have to build something from scratch. You'd have to buy an existing plane design anyway. Designing an aircraft, even a model, requires a vast knowledge in aerodynamics and aeronautical engineering. Anyway, I'm not saying it's impossible, but a project like that would take over your life and your bank account.

Gambrinus, I agree. Posting addresses is ridiculous, borderline criminal. Oh well, it will stay there until someone sues. You can't get an address from a license plate, why a call sign?

I will not be posting mine here or on any other web site...

Tactical Corner / Re: Disinformation

Very interesting subject. I am sure it would happen. Personally, I would take anything with a big grain of salt. Being a radio operator would probably mean being the "news guy" for your neighborhood, or even your town. I would not forward anything until it is duly verified from different sources, if possible. Disinformation could have dire consequences on a community, and so could not acting on the news of a threat, if it was real. I would make sure to discuss any news with some level headed individuals before spreading it, on the air or around town..

As to creating it... I would say it could be a benefit in some situations to create radio chatter with disinformation to keep away roaming gangs who could be listening.. As long as it doesn't harm anyone. It is a double-edge sword though...

Hello,

Assuming a SHTF/WROL situation, when would people use their radios to get information on HF bands? At night? During the day? What about a party relocating on foot? There would be so much to do then and so much confusion, there might not be much time to even use a radio...

You guys who go hiking, packing a radio, when did you find yourself using it?
If you had to care more about safety, would that change your timing?

When on the move, I am assuming radio operations would have to be during periods of rest...
Would that be during the day, or at night?

Thanks.

Well, I know close to nothing about aircraft models, but I am pretty sure the limit is 1W for remote control...

Electric motor.. You can recharge it with solar panels. Why not use an off the shelf remote?

Great post Mitch, thanks.

I did order the Buddistick, though I certainly don't expect miracles..
What kind of contacts did you manage with it on 5W, 15W?

Thanks,

Gil.

Hum, sounds overkill and too risky to me.. I don't think anyone would use it in an emergency. A "normal" emergency or support stuff like ARES does, sure, but a real SHTF situation, nah.. Just another gadget to sell radios...
