Tactical Corner / EMP protection
September 21, 2015, 09:55:54 PM
Just a quick question. If I were to place a radio in a sealed metal box, padded on all sides and in the original cardboard packaging, will it be protected in the case of an EMP if it is not grounded? I was thinking of having a pre programmed radio in a backpack kept in the cargo compartment of the wife's SUV.

Tactical Corner / What am I looking for?
December 07, 2013, 04:59:24 PM
I saw a picture somewhere where a guy mounted a UV-5RE or other HT on a chest rig and fed an antenna cable through the webbing and had the antenna mounted on his back.... What would be needed to make a setup like this work? Wouldn't the "extension cable" alter how the antenna would perform? I'm thinking this would be an ideal setup for what I'm looking for... School me please....

General Discussion / An easier way??
October 21, 2013, 10:38:35 AM
My wife and I are driving from Phoenix, AZ to Tupelo , MS, leaving tomorrow, for my mom's funeral. I am trying to set up my UV-5RE with repeater freqs along the way with CHIRP so I have it incase of an emergency but the only way I can figure to do it is to pick a couple out of each county we're gonna be driving through but there is no way to know if they are still active. I found this site, http://k5ehx.net/, but it won't just give me the 2m repeaters, it gives me everything. From the looks of it, I've still got 4 hours of copying and pasting... damn Texas... We are taking the southern route to Dallas along the 10 to the 20 to the 30 to the 40.....It's a little longer but we are picking up family in Texas... Anyone know of a better way to do this??

General Discussion / Flying with radio
September 30, 2013, 09:39:06 PM
First off, let me say howdy. New to the site and to amateur radio in general. I have a UV-5RE. Figured it would be cheap enough to mess with until I learn more and learn what I would like. I am not transmitting as I have yet to get my license but I enjoy listening. My question is, I am flying back to Alabama to see my mom who has cancer and was thinking of taking it with me. I am only planning on taking a backpack as carry-on. Anyone think I would have problems or should I just leave it at home?
