Title: Soldering on PCB - I Started Simple... Really Simple :)
Post by: DogDidIt on January 12, 2014, 06:45:46 PM
Hello all,
If you've been like me, wanting to buy/build that first qrp kit, but concerned about your soldering skills on small objects, one option is to first start on a kid's mini kit.

I've soldered before but never on a pcb, so I decided to first start on a kid's learn-to-solder mini kit.  All it does is flash a couple of LEDs, but it was good to improve my skills and build my confidence on something cheap/small.  What's next, you ask?  I'm thinking a KX-1.  :)
Happy building everyone.

It does look good.  Nice work.
For me, the big thing to remember with soldering is that it is all about heat flow.  Tiny parts on a skinny trace take only a little heat.  Copper really sucks up the heat, so a large part connected to a big area of copper on the board will take a lot of heat.

And it is important that the tip of your soldering iron touches both the component lead and the copper trace..
