Awsome post, Gil. I've been considering getting one of the RTL dongles. It's nice to know you can setup a monitoring station, essentially on the cheap.

It's good to see your RSS feed running again. Missed you guys.

General Discussion / Re: Local ham community
April 17, 2015, 06:31:42 AM
I've been involved with our local group supporting public service events, like bike rides. Probably do less this year than the 15 events I did last year.

Besides public service events, Skywarn is also active locally.

I've taken the online FEMA training which is required for ARES/RACES by the state, but they're not active. Then there's CERT, and CAP. One of the local hams is very involved with them.

I hope I've gotten the RSS feed setup properly on my aggregator. I haven't been getting posts, but I think it's working now. We'll see.

General Discussion / Local ham community
April 16, 2015, 06:28:57 AM
I didn't attend a rather large local ham fest recently, no funds. Now I'm hearing about all these great deals everyone found.

How active are you guys in your local ham community? How active is your community?

I'm only on local repeaters. No HF yet. However, I've pretty much settled on getting a ICOM 718 when funds allow.

Haven't heard anyone on recently. I'm assuming that means everyone has projects they're working on. Mine is a large n-tier application I'm writing in Java. Hope to finish it up by Memorial Day. What's everyone else doing these days?

For anyone who's interested, https://westernrifleshooters.wordpress.com/2015/03/26/ruby-tail/

There is a concern that training exercises like the Boston Bombing are covers for a buildup to martial law, which would be illegal under the current constitutional form of government we enjoy.

I'm not a constitutional scholar, but why is the military allowed to train on domestic soil other than US owned property? Isn't this exactly what the founders wrote as a safe guard against a military coup?

Not to raise anyone's ire, but yes, I'm a conspiracy theorist, since I acknowledge there is a chief conspirator.

I'm hopefully going to be on HF, soon. Looking forward to participating in some nets, as propagation allows. Just out of curiosity, what are the monitoring capabilities of the NSA, NWO, et al wrt to the radio spectrum. I understand the concept of whatever you transmit is in the public domain, but is surveillance as thorough as geo-synchronous satellites being able to monitor all frequencies 24/7? TIA

Just snagged all 3. My only concern is I won't be able to put them down. Thanks for posting, Ms. Shaw!

I've read Brakken, Garret, Baze, and I'm looking forward to adding to the roll. Thanks, again!

The Amazon Kindle reader app is available as a free download, and extension in Google Chrome, don't know about other browsers, but I expect it is, if one's available.

I do almost all of my reading in the Kindle app. It goes where I do, anywhere there's an internet connection, which is just about everywhere.

I've been looking for a new book to read, and I'm interested in both of the books you've posted. Looking forward to reading them, thanks!

Gil, thanks! I'm here to talk radio, too. I apologize for wasting anyone's time or bandwidth.

More specifically, and to the point, one of these days, I will get on HF!!! For now, I talk a lot on local repeaters, but not as much as some. The area I'm in has a decent number of amateur radio operators, most of whom are of a friendly nature.

I read a post today from ARRL that the number of licensed amateur radio operators is at an all time high. That's just in the US. With things headed the way they are, I would expect that number to carry over globally.

There's lot's to get excited about in the hobby, and I appreciate a place to exchange stories and ideas. Many thanks, Gil!

Gil, just curious, and I'm not looking to get banned. Did you get any complaints about the posts? I know one person made a statement about no religious posts being allowed, but it wasn't you, and neither have any off topic religious threads been started. I do have an opinion, and if it's not welcome, then I understand that. It's an issue for me when you start censoring, or threaten to do so.

If other people don't like something, they're free to voice their opinion, as well, but they should do so openly. I haven't seen any complaints, except the one, and that individual seemed pretty closed minded about it, or rather, intolerant, while at the same time expressing their own opinion.

Such is the way of the world. If my opinion isn't welcome, like you said, there's plenty of other places to hang out.

Gil, I'll just point out the US Constitution provides for freedom of religion and speech.

It's a right, just as you have the right to censor, if you choose. If you want to avoid religious topics, again, your choice.

I didn't realize you were going to make that choice for everyone.

I take a slightly different view from a biblical perspective. If it was within man to save himself, he would have already done so. We're seeing the culmination of a super cycle. While innovation will proceed, it can't keep up with the exponential growth of population and debt. While the money supply could reset, which is the godly thing to do, it won't as long as those in control have anything to say about, population reset is a little more problematic.

In old testament Judaism, every 50th year was the year of jubilee, when the land reverted to it's original ownership, and all debts forgiven. Debt repudiation is what is needed now. I know, won't happen.

You can look at WWII, which as freax pointed out, is ancient times, 3% of the world's population were killed. 30 to 50 percent of the population in Europe died from the black plague in the mid fourteenth century.

The population isn't going to reduce itself, and total global debt, which is twice global GDP, isn't going to repudiate itself. My hope for myself, family, colleagues, and all who love the Lord, is the return of Christ in glory.

"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34 ESV)

Jesus said these words in his sermon on the mount, after being baptized by John the baptist, and being tempted by the devil in the wilderness for 40 days and nights.

The bible says a lot about what is occurring now, and what will soon take place. Our lives are but a fleeting instant compared to all eternity. The choices we make today have eternal consequences. My prayer for each of you is that you accept Jesus as Lord, believe God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved. Saved from what? Saved from the wrath of God which is coming upon all who don't believe. That is where the world is headed, and that's why I say don't neglect the most important step in prepping, spiritual.

"So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor 13:13)

Peace

Licensing / Re: Do you REALLY need that ham license?

Self-sufficiency comes in many forms and what you're describing, over-population and lack of economic opportunity, is pervasive everywhere. Welcome to global depression 2.0. In nature, over-population is a self-correcting condition.

You're self taught and have critical thinking skills. I would make the best of the present situation while you can.

Unfortunately, whether or not you believe the bible, things aren't going to get better anytime soon. At least not if TPTB have anything to do with it. They're too greedy. So, if those in power won't lift a finger to help the plight of man, what hope is there? Only one, to resist, and it comes back to self-sufficiency. It doesn't help that you're stuck on a prison island with little chance of escape. It sounds like you're already making the best of your circumstances.

If you believe the bible, then there's that hope, too. Either way, the world is what it is, and there isn't too much anyone can do about. On a local scale, there's lot's you can do regarding building community.

I can't help but think Australia is a legacy of the British feudal system, with much the same problems, made worse by over-crowding and socialist policies. The natural end of these dynamics will be simply wide scale riots, starvation, and death, thereby correcting the population problems and the big reset. If the problems are, there are too many people for too few jobs, there are three alternative, providing social welfare, which we've seen only creates generations of dependence. Providing more jobs, or culling the population. I think we're headed for the big cull. But we'll see.

Keep your head down, Freax, which may be difficult, depending on what you meant by your height being a detriment to employment.

Freax has been busy. He's the only contributor to the site in the last 30 days, that I could tell.

I've got plenty of sources for EOTW stuff, and I like radio stuff, but still learning. The key to providing valuable information is having more than one source for the information.

I know I don't have all the answers, but I know who does!

Digital Modes / Re: Low Current Draw Netbook
February 18, 2015, 01:48:39 PM
I have a ASUS C300 EDU with the N2830 Intel Celeron dual core 64 bit 2.16 MHz processor, 4 GB RAM and 32 GB SSD. It's a Chromebook and I have Ubuntu installed using Crouton. It's the front end for a future digital comms rig.

I switched from an ARM processor to Intel in order to install some programs with native libraries not compiled for ARM. The Raspberry PI has the same ARM processor, so it's a consideration when figuring out what to run.

The Chromebook gets ~11 hrs on a charge and charges fast. What's not to like? I found on open box item on Amazon Warehouse, and haven't looked back.

If you're considering a netbook, take a look at the Chromebook. We have 5 of them for the family, with the latest edition being the ASUS. The older ones are the Samsung 303C with 16 GB SSD and 2 GB RAM, which you can pick up used on Craigslist for ~$100

Although I agree 110% with all the scriptures you quoted, the movie Noah had very little to do with the way the story of Noah went !  When I saw it, I had to shake my head.  Rock monsters ?  Come on, give me a break !  Hitchhikers on the ark ?  Yeah, granted Noah was a Bible character but that movie was a big disappointment !

Agreed. And thanks for the reply. I get a little carried away sometimes. A lot going on, and the pace seems to be accelerating.

It was the sentiment I was trying to express. And it sounds like we agree on that part. 73's.

It's called peak everything, and yes, we will experience shocks to the system. There is no evidence other societies have "pushed the reset button". The Romans were the greatest civilization ever known, and the Greeks prior to that. There have been leaders and conquerors, and you can read about it all in the history books.

I've stated previously in this thread, I have a standard for truth, and that is the word of God, which is about as WA (as in WAG) as it gets. It's the best we've got, and no one has or ever will do any better for man than what has already been done, salvation (John 3:16).

One thing about population is, it can be reduced in a hurry. I prep because I like a fighting chance.

Here's a good topic for a thread. What, how, and why would you prep for an EMP/Solar flare? What about CBRN? What's in your kit?

Cheers, freax!
