This comes to me this AM in my KX3 digest from the Yahoo group. If I had the time I'd be hanging around trying to listen for them. Narrow window. Talk about getting some wire "up & in the clear."  8)

SOTA Activation Plan W7W/LC-001 Mt Saint Helens June 11

My non-ham kid brother Roy has been wanting to climb Mt Saint Helens for a long time.  We managed to snag permits for Tuesday June 11.  Roy has agreed to accompany me, even though the summit time will involve a lot of radio stuff.  "Summit" is the wrong term.  We will be within the SOTA activation zone, but normally the summit of Mt Saint Helens is a menacing cornice which overhangs the extremely steep crater wall, so we'll stand clear of the actual summit.  We will try hard to reach the activation zone (2520 m or higher) by about 1300 PDT (2000 UTC) on Tuesday June 11.

I will be sending APRS packets on 144.390 MHz with the current operating frequency and mode, so please check <http://aprs.fi/#!mt=hybrid&z=11&call=a%2FN7RR&timerange=86400&tail=3600> for updates.  Hopefully chasers will relay that information to SOTAwatch2 <http://www.sotawatch.org/>.  I'll be using my Bonnie Crystal KQ6XA-designed doublet held aloft with trekking poles and an avalanche probe.  See: <http://www.qsl.net/kq6xa/antenna/>.  I'll operate my Elecraft KX3 with a Begali Adventure paddle.

I will monitor 445.450 MHz simplex during the operation.  You can send me APRS messages addressed to N7RR, including frequency and mode sked requests.  Yes, I'll also carry a microphone for the KX3, but I only plan to operate SSB upon request.  Here is the general plan.  I'll operate frequencies and modes in the following order:
6 m CW          50 090 kHz for 5 min to 10 min
6 m PSK31      50 290.15 kHz for 5 min to 10 min
12 m CW        24 906 kHz for 15 min to 30 min
12 m PSK31    24 920.15 kHz for 15 min to 30 min
17 m CW        18 072 kHz for 5 min to 10 min
17 m PSK31    18 100.15 kHz for 5 min to 10 min
30 m CW        10 141 kHz for 15 min to 30 min
30 m PSK31    10 142.15 kHz for 15 min to 30 min
80 m CW        3557 kHz for 5 min to 10 min
80 m PSK31    3580.15 kHz for 5 min to 10 min

For PSK31 operation, I'll be using the nifty internal KX3 function which allows me to send PSK31 using a Morse paddle and reading sent and received text on the KX3 scrolling display.  Especially on PSK31, I may have to ask for repeats if I didn't follow that scrolling display fast enough.  Please understand that I'll be operating on a sloping snowslope, trying to anchor my gear down with a plunged ice axe.  I'll attach a string tether to my KX3.  The Begali Adventure paddle attaches directly to the KX3.

In case of  equipment malfunction, I'll use my Rockmite-20 on 14 058.45 kHz or
14 057.72 kHz CW.  I always carry a complete Amateur Radio station package in a trouser cargo pocket centered around that rig.

Mt Saint Helens is worth 10 SOTA points.  I'll send signal reports according to the Copyability and Strength system.  See the N7RR QRZ.com page for details.  I hope to give 10 points to lots of chasers on Tuesday.

Very cool! I'll have to make it a point to try a contact with him Tuesday.

It's always cool to talk with people out in the woods and/or mountaineering. Two weeks ago I had a CW chat with Paul/W0RW . He was atop Pike's Peak using a British military surplus PRC-319 on his back pedestrian mobile. This Mt. St. Helens will be even more interesting.
