I sold almost all my radio stuff a while back and now I'm thinking of getting another one. But, I'm just not keen on spending nearly a thousand dollars again for a radio that I mostly listen to. (I found, over time, that I really didn't have much to say) I thoroughly enjoyed 17m for the special even stations and lack of contesting and want 80m for NVIS experiments. Also, I want cheap, cw and ssb. To that end, I've found this:
http://qrznow.com/hambuilder-all-band-trx-full-set-rtc03britxhbrf0120wpa-fully-assembled/
Haven't seen it on the eBay store yet, but the single band model is only $170 or so. Anybody here heard anything about these or have any experience with them? I know I'll probably end up shelling out four or five hundred dollars for one of the usual suspects, but until I give up the search, I'll be hoping for something less expensive and as useful.

Antennas / PAC-12 antenna
September 16, 2016, 09:44:48 PM
Any thoughts on this antenna:

I'm wondering if it'd be worth it to try and homebrew one or just buy the one on the site. Anybody here have experience with this antenna? Or one like it?

I haven't forgotten about this group or the fact that I want to make contact with several of you. Summer just isn't a good time for me to sit in front of a radio. I've been selling some extra radios, working longer hours and working on some other things around the house. Hopefully by the end of winter I'll be working some CW. Hope everyone enjoys the heat and humidity! Lol

Technical Corner / Making progress on the RM][
June 22, 2014, 09:55:57 AM
Worked on the rock mite last night a little. Probably won't work on it again for a few days, but I've got a start and I'm really enjoying it. I was sent three sets of crystals so I'm still not real sure what frequency I'm going to go with. I might use the sockets that were sent so I can switch out the crystals.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Bought a Yaesu FT920 along with an MFJ 949D tuner, two yaesu Vhf radios and an Astron power supply. I hope to sell off everything but the FT920. I think I'll also sell my Icom 718 to help cover costs. Now I've got 6 meters!

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Technical Corner / Finally arrived
May 27, 2014, 03:26:49 PM
I've been wondering where this has been since I never got a shipping notification. But it came today and I'll put it in my electronics box for this winter. Summer is the time for working on a cabin.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Tactical Corner / Tube radios and EMPs
May 17, 2014, 10:10:01 AM
I was messing around with the Drake last night and it occurred to me: After an EMP, or in any "grid-down" situation, the Drake would be useless to me. Even if it survived an EMP, it plugs into the wall and we live in a part of the country that wouldn't be real high on the list to have power restored. So why are tube radios always suggested for EMP readiness?

I know I mentioned wanting to try and make regular contacts with you guys in the radio, but tornado season is here so my antenna spend a lot of time lying in the ground, unhooked from my radio. It's just a fiberglass pole and I'm afraid it'll get broken. So, I haven't been in the radio hardly at all lately. Once the high winds aren't so much of a threat anymore I'll be back on. I'm just thankful I don't live anywhere near Mayflower or Vilonia.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

I like the size and I like that the spring appears to be from a ball point click pen.  Easy to find a replacement if this one takes a leap somewhere.  The instructions said to clean up burrs and sharp edges left over from the milling process, but I didn't find any. The parts were all very clean and smooth when I opened the package.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

Morse Code / Accessories for my Rock Mite ][
April 27, 2014, 05:48:30 PM
Ok, so I've ordered a 40m RM and found a plastic enclosure on Ebay. I'm wondering about this filter: http://midnightscience.com/kits.html is just a CW filter, right? I don't understand the "center frequency" bit. And will this work with the RM40][ that I've ordered?

Morse Code / Rock-Mite question
April 22, 2014, 08:58:35 PM
When I check out the RM on the web page, they show available frequencies. Am I right that I can only get one frequency per kit? So if I built one, I'd only be able to transmit and receive on that one frequency?

Net Activity / Saturday night

10m isn't doing so well.  I'm on 14.330 if anyone is around.  I can tune everything but 160 if someone would rather choose a different frequency.

Net Activity / I'll be on the air Saturday night
April 08, 2014, 03:55:35 PM
I plan on being on the air this Saturday from about 6 pm cst till 10 pm cst. I'll probably actually be at the radio for an hour or two and then I'll watch tv while monitoring the radio. I like 10, 12 and 17 meters. On 10 I stay between 28.3 & 28
5. I'll try to post frequencies later this evening.

I've got a Baofeng UV-5R and a Kenwood TM-V71A. I've seriously considered selling the Kenwood since the Baofeng does the same thing. Any suggestions or comments?

I want to do more than make contacts. I'd like to get to know people in different parts of the country, primarily in the middle of America. That is where the news that I'd be interested in would be coming from. I'm also interested in QRP. If we ever experienced rolling blackouts, I'd be able to run a QRP rig off of a marine battery and solar charger without worrying too much. I'd like to learn more about NVIS propagation, too. That'll require someone fairly close and it seems those of us here are kind of far apart. But that's how prepping affects my hobby. Just about the only reason I turn my radio on is for stateside contacts. I'd like some Canadian contacts as well, though. I've also got a couple of books on shortwave listening and I'm trying to figure out when certain programs are on and how I can best receive them. I've also made a regen receiver once to work on my solder skills in case I ever had to work on a radio (and actually knew what to do), but I screwed up one little part of it and scrapped in. (I know this post rambled a bit. I was trying to stay on point but was also watching tv while I was doing it)
