Antennas / Revisiting the EA3GCY MEF-1 EFHW Tuner.
March 09, 2018, 02:00:28 PM
Hello.

A while ago I tested the MEF-1 but had some trouble adjusting the SWR. The problem was actually due to my MR-100 antenna analyzer. I tried again and this time got a perfect SWR, from 1.1:1 on 14MHz to 2:1 on 14.35MHz. That's a lot of bandwidth. My wire is 33ft long, or 10.1m. The Reverse Beacon Network report was quite surprising with quite a few spots from the United States! Now I need one for a 30m end-fed.

Technical Corner / I finished my Weber Soda Pop!
March 06, 2018, 05:09:36 PM
Hello,

I finally got it all done!

  • Added an acrylic green screen.
  • Three 18650 cells in the case.
  • Inboard balanced charger.
  • Inboard MPPT solar charge controller.
  • Balanced port and lead for external charger.
  • Mini speaker.

I destroyed two acrylic screens and one speaker before getting it all packed up :o
The plug near the speaker is the balanced charging port.
Time to get my ass outside now  ;D

General Discussion / Have you tried the 160m band?
October 31, 2017, 06:42:16 PM
Hello. I never have... Wondering about its utility in a prepping context...

Have you tried the 160m band? What is your experience? What do you think about it?

Antennas / New Elecraft AX1 Antenna.
October 20, 2017, 11:56:08 AM
Hello gang.

I received a PDf from Wayne about the new Elecraft AX1 antenna, a dual-band 17/20m telescopic antenna. The whip collapses to 6". A tuner is required. It seems this antenna is mainly for HT type operations but also works for tabletop operating. I would put it in competition with the MFJ-1820T.

The PDF file is attached... No precise release date or price available at this time... I hope to get one for testing...

Technical Corner / New Steve Weber Project.

From the AT_Sprint Yahoo group:

QuoteI just ordered proto boards for a SSB reversion of the Soda Pop, tentatively named "slop bucket".

It's based on the Survivor SSB rig design, but with a Si5351 VFO and of course, mostly SMT parts. It is slightly bigger then the soda pop board, but not by much.(92 x 100 mm). It includes a VOX circuit so it can be connected directly to a sound card for digital mode operation.  I decided not to board mount the jacks this time for two reasons. 1) to keep the board smaller then 100 x 100 mm and 2) it allows more flexibility of enclosure choices.

My plan is to initially offer just 50 kits, all of the same band and only to US address. I know this will disappoint a lot of people, but it makes my life easier.  ETA is before Christmas.

The main reason for offering just one band is because the IF frequency is different depending on the band to keep unwanted mixer products well away from the operating frequency.

A 20 M version will use a 9 MHz IF and a 40M version will use a 11.059 MHz IF. The 20M version will likely require a more expensive PA then the 40M version to get decent power output and that could impact the price of the kit, but probably not by too much. The price will be in the ball park of the Soda Pop kit.
