General Discussion / Re: Field Day: What to expect?
February 05, 2015, 04:46:22 PM
I had a good time too.  I got to show off my rig that only a couple others have seen except in pictures.  It also helped me find out what worked about it and what didn't.  I've already discovered that the guide rails for my rack need to be re-worked.  I've got Spring Break coming up in March so maybe I'll get to work on it then if not sooner.

Summer FD is pretty much a social occasion too.  The only ones that go really balls-out on it are our CW guys.  Even with that our club still scores among the top in the state.

Did any of you guys do Winter Field Day?  It's not an ARRL event.  This one is sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Amateur Radio (SPAR).

My club used it to test out a potential new site for ARRL Field Day.  I had a good time.  I spent most of it doing a dog and pony show for my station-in-a-box.  It did get a fair amount of Ooohs and Ahhs!  I think I ended up making a whopping 5 contacts; but they did give us multipliers that we wouldn't have others received.

Yeah, those ought to work.  You'll need to insulate the inside with something like cupboard shelf liner or (what I use) FlexSeal rubber in a can.

You could hook a generator up to my ex's mouth and power NYC for a month!

New To Radio / Re: interstate communication

I agree with about 98% of what Bob said.

I would add though that if you're going to be involved at the club level with amateur radio it's a good idea to go ahead and get your Amateur Extra class license.  If you want to help out proctoring license exams it helps to be an Extra.  You can do it as a General; but the only ones you can proctor are Technician class exams.

Then there's that whole OCD thing... ;D

I'm guessing; but probably because you're the new guy.  I think you've got to make 5 posts before that goes away.  It's a way to keep spammers off the system that make it through the other protections.

Thanks for the info, Bob.  I'll check it out.

Edit:  Wow!  Those things sure aren't cheap!  I might have to save up my lunch money a little while to get one.

You hit the nail in the head!  It's intended to power my FT-857.

What are the battery boosters you're talking about, Bob?

Eventually I may build a second one of these; but it might be a while.

I got an extra day off yesterday thanks to an air conditioner meltdown so I was able to finish up the battery box.

Watch my video here (if you want):  http://youtu.be/gOVuQqO1j1M?list=UUgoBcwyiySiF0BcglCVx4Tg

It didn't all go according to plan.  I ended up having to remove one of the batteries to free up enough space to not put too much stress on the wires coming off the PowerPole connections at the front and back of the box.  Oh well, it still works like I intended.

Digital Modes / Re: Jumpstart me on PSK31...

If you have an iPad, iPhone or Android device there is an interface that will allow you you connect the device to your radio and do PSK31.  I'll see if I can find the link where I got mine and post it here.

EasyDigi Interface for iPhone and iPad:

I'm sure they make something for Android too; but I can't find it.  :'(
