i think its a great idea. but would the ability to atleast monitor the air bands or marine bands be important? offering an ability to know if someone who may not be on hf could be close enough to see a visual signal or close enough to keep your eyes open to avoid being found if thats is needed.

I'll try to turn a few my club guys on to it. Most I'm sad to say are not as young as they used to be.

Sub'd just the other day. I actually stumble across your channel. I thought it was you but was sure till I found this thread. Loved seeing military radio field phone combos.

Where did you find them? I got a funny story about the old hand crank field phones.

Short version is ,  while in the field on a training exercise and fellow no one really like was a real pain in the ass one day. Later that night someone taped the field phone leads to his toe while he slept. And cranked that phone fast as they could. Everyone awoke to  a green sleeping jumping around yelling til it fell over another bunk and fell to the ground. Looked like gumby  trying to dance. I about pee'd myself.

Midland has a new gmrs offering. It's a 40 mobile I'm not sure but I here it has some gmrs repeaters preprogrammed.

I think one of the problems is the agencies use these small shot Glass type of antenna. So line of sight and surface area is no longer optimized. Just my opinion.

And I totally agree with the, you going to have to go with what you got. Hell you may to result to using smoke signals.

Some older guys where fishing in the coastal marshes along Georgia. They a had a mechanical failure and no cell service. No radio. After the tide went out they were really stuck. They decided to set the patch of grass next to their boat.

Not long after they set the fire a coast guard chopper shows up and recovers them.

I must I don't if that's stories true or not but it's highly probable.

Radio ray I totally agree. I was in law enforcement during the change from UHF VHF analog to digital. My questions to the bean counters was what about hurricanes and other weather events. Their response  was, the stations had alternate power. My next question was do we have alternate towers and antennas? They looked at me like I was crazy. Using VHF UHF we could successfully get away with two repeaters. In digital mode range is so much shorter.  It takes five repeaters to cover the same area. Talking car to car is only possible for a couple miles at best.

As an everyday use digital is OK. But I'd like to meet the guy who thought this was so awesome. They did not take into account that rural areas don't have 10 story buildings every few miles.

But interoperability and NIMS training is going to solve all that. Lol that's a whole nother animal to kill.

I was just about to test for my tech license so I would have more weight with my sheriff. To at least have 2 or 3 people per shift basically licensed. I felt with the personnel becoming hams and getting to know local hams would be invaluable in a grid down emergency. Not to mention using the ham radios to communicate over the old VHF UHF system as most agencies still have their equipment at tower sites.

We haven't had a direct hit by a hurricane since the 30's I believe. When it comes it's going to be bad. 

All that to says any comms is better than no comms. But, it's better to have the right comms and know they will work.

Also, the fusion repeaters having setting no where digital and analog can communicate to each other. The fusion repeaters will automatically retransmit digital as analog if analog was the last transmitted source. If the analog user hears static like noise when digital is Transmitted.

It's my understanding there software you can flash on the 380 that turns into a super scanner of sorts. It makes it where you can monitor traffic in any group on you band, even radio to radio private traffic. I haven't used it personally but know all law enforcement and public safety going digital, it would make for some I scanning.

Very interesting read. I am a new ham. I've had my ticket less than a year. I am a broke individual. Lol. So guess what first purchase was.....yep the uv5r. I have one in my truck set up !Ike a poor man's Mobile. Work great for what it is. My local repeater is pretty tall. It gives my little cheap radio about 35 plus mile radius.

The plain talk is coming from the NIMS interoperability training. Stemming from 911 and some other incidents.  Now, that said if you're monitoring a plain speech agency and you start hearing more codes or signal(followed by alphanumeric identifier) and you're working an event, one of two things are happening. 1. Somebody has committed a I.D.10-T error(locked keys in a vehicle, damaged a vehicle or misplaced equipment. and they're trying not to let everyone know. Or 2. Something serious is kicking off and they're trying get key tactical personnel placed or enroute quietly.

About misplaced equipment, cops are famous for leaving ticket books, hats, gloves even portable radios on top of a car and drive off.

As far as an active shooter goes, ID rather be tried 12 than carried by 6. If, God forbid, you ever have to use deadly force on a person or persons upon arrival of police offer no resistance. Meaning don't try explaining anything off the bat. Hands up. if you haven't dropped the weapon yet and can do so with one hand drop your mag and drop the gun. Don't wait for them to tell them you just do it.

They will treat you like a offender initially, grin an bare it. They are trying to secure the scene.

Now if you're operating as a ham and crap kicks off, you communicated informational details would of the most importance.

So weight heavily and quickly the tools you have at you disposal and how can you be of greatest benefit to the situational awareness of responders.
In an event scenario the event HQ or CP would usually be the first Command and control with it moving closer to incident later depending area covered by the event.

Also in large events, don't assume no uniform means civilian/offender off the bat either. More times than not there will a large contengent of plain clothes officers in the crowd.

If you field comms kit has image transmission capabilities, keep that in mind if a situation transforms from active to hostage. Someone may have video or stills that could transmitted if cell towers or clogged and hand delivery is not ideal given environmental or tactical factors.

Sorry for the novel. I just felt i would add my two cents based on my experience.
