Bob,
Looking to do this myself soon. I've wanted to snowshoe into the woods and settel down somewhere for the night. I have a 3 piece mil issue bag that is rated to -40 but i'm not too interested in testing it. Gonna wait till we get an overnight temp above 20 w/o wind and try it.

General Discussion / Re: Summits On The Air (SOTA)

for those with iPhones you can get the SOTA Goat app that alerts you when stations are on the air. I have found it very difficult to contact these stations with my dipole and 100 watts but I plan to keep trying.

I am planning to activate some mountains that are within a 1-2 hour drive this fall and winter

Digital Modes / Re: APRS - What do you use it for?
September 08, 2014, 07:54:50 AM
I use APRS all the time in my mobile. Sometimes i choose to broadcast my position and sometimes i don't. IT has a messaging feature linked with winlink that works pretty well. I was on vacation recently w/o cell service and was able to get messages out to friends. I have a kenwood D710 in the truck and have one side on APRS and the other on a local repeater or the national calling freq. The radio will give my potion report and also what channel the other side of the radio is on. So if you looking for a random QSO on 2m that's an easy way to get it done. I also do EMCOMM for the town and i see a need for it there especially if we have a short grid down situation like we did this past Saturday when a microburst tore through town.

Yes APRS works on 30m HF.

No iPad, iPhone or Android.   :(    I'm still using a Blackberry.  At least it's free.   ;D

Thanks for the help, y'all.  I'm going to do some more research this weekend but it sounds like the SignalLink/FLDigi might be the combination I need.  I can save ten bucks if I order the SignalLink today so I guess that part's good as done.

Solid combo. I have the 857. May want to pick up the programming/cat cable for the 450 so you can use your computer to change stations/freqs if you choose.

I would also add a DC LED light strip. Very bright and use very low power.

Don't overlook the FT-857D.  It's essentially the 897 packaged for mobile use.  You can't get a bolt-on tuner or built-in power supply for the 857.  I use mine as an all purpose rig.  I mount it in my car making use of the remoteable face plate, or it sits at home in my shack with a DC power supply and tuner next to it.

I agree on the 857. The radio coupled with a 7AH battery will be a little heavier than the 817 and a battery but you can still operate for a decent amount of time and at 10-20 watts.

Summer activity drops off for me. Between kids, yard work and fishing it's hard to get out or go down in the shack and operate.
