I'm running 100W but my dipole is 27ft at center and slopes down to about 12ft at the ends. It's definitely NVIS but I can still make DX contacts with it when conditions are right. I don't know how much you copied of mine but I was probably hearing you about as well as you were hearing me, and you with just over a tenth of the power I was running.

Hey, At least I could hear you and copy almost 50% of what was sent. I didn't hear even a peep on SSB.

No contact. Noise floor is S5 for me on 40 meters. If it's just you and I Gil I'd be willing to try CW. Just don't run away from me. I'm still pounding out 13WPM on a straight key.

BTW. I was thinking SSB but if you prefer I can do CW as well. Just not as well. If SSB 7.250 sounds clear here.

Is anybody up to trying to QSO tonight? I can do 15-80 meters but we must keep it in the General band limits.

Both.

Gil.

I didn't want to splainit to ya just to find out ya already know and I'm just mak'n a dweeb of myself, but if ya want to know...

Broadcasting is transitions intended for the general public (non-hams) and is never allowed. Except for maybe in emergencies.
One way communications are intended for other hams and should not contain content of interest to the general public.
Examples of acceptable one way communications are: morse code practice, telemetry, radio controlled craft, beacons, bulletins that are of no interest to the public, etc.
The tricky part about one way communications is that the rules about sharing the bands and not causing interference still apply but for things like radio remote control and beacons, it can be hard to assure compliance sometimes. A person should at least make a reasonable attempt at compliance with these rules though. I agree with you that WA1Ws strict time and freq. schedule is hardly an attempt at compliance.

I have always wondered about that...

I'm on a trip and I don't have a portable HF rig so all I can do tonight is echolink.

sell it and use the funds to buy a QRP CW rig.
I thought about selling something to fund the purchase of something else once. I quickly decided I'd do what I've always done, patiently excevate the couch cushions until I can afford to buy what I want without selling anything.

I'd keep it. Two is one and one is none and the Kenwood is likely to outlast the Baofeng. That's just me talking, I can't get rid of anything.

Well, not to hijack this thread. If it goes on we can move it to another one, right Gil? Perhaps join it to the one where you posted the driver links. My brother responded and I copied and pasted the contents of his email below. ________

Well, it was a process. If he has already tried to download drivers and it's not working, he will have to delete all of them and try them one at a time (try one and if it doesn't work, delete it before downloading another). If you have more than one, the wrong driver will conflict with the right driver and you won't know which one is actually the right one. This link is what I used to delete the drivers: http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/1ycs7w/mac_os_x_programming_baofeng_uv5r_with_chirp/

I bought the $10 cable thinking it may be genuine since it was a little more and was Baofeng branded. It wasn't, so I had to delete the driver I first tried and use the "generic" driver. Here is the link I used to find the drivers:
http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MacOS_Tips

The one that worked for me, was the one with this label:
Generic PL-2303 cables (counterfeit and/or "Generic")

Well what he told me is that you can never be quit sure what manufacture of cable you are getting. It could be a Baofeng cable or it could be made by some other Chinese manufacture. For him it was a matter of trying different drivers. He tried the one for Baofeng cables first and when that didn't work he uninstalled that driver so that he could try a different one. I think he got things on speaking terms after his second or third driver. I'll write him and ask for links to those drivers if you like.

Yes, I'd like to get the DC power supply and measure how much power it actually consumes with that. I figure it's substantial because I can use it as a heater for my office. I'm hoping that one marine battery and solar panel would be sufficient for about an hour per day, enough for a sked.
