I chose the VX-6R because it appeared to be the smallest unit in the Yaesu line.  What caused you to choose the models you have?

I chose the vx7 because I wanted a HT that was waterproof. I had a ft60, which worked well, but the size and lack of waterproofing made the 7 a better choice for my activities. I picked up the vx8gr on a whim when I saw one listed on qrz for a great price. I has a built in GPS and the ability to do APRS which I found to be a great feature.

Great HT. I have a 7 and a 8.

There are a couple of apps for smartphones that show you the closest based on position and allows you to search a frequency that you can hear

What about adding a jumper or an added length of something not as robust?

Example, for 2m/440 i have a Diamond stick on the side of the house w/o my electrical feed on it. My shack is opposite of that so i ran 50' of LMR-400 to my shack. I sometimes will add a UHF to SMA jumper for my HT or add 20' of RG-58 to get it across the room to my FT-857.

Will loss only occur on the smaller lengths of coax?

My opinion is biased though.
Gil.

You don't say..... :)

It's a little more than that and you have the ability to shut off the positioning beacon and just glean the info.

Just got a HT and got a mobile on the way that does APRS.

Anyone else use it?

how do i get on this list?

Those particular quotes came from a group that I participate in, by way of 40 meter WINMOR.  The group does not wish to allow internet-only members, but has a strong preponderance of prepper-related activity.  For them, it's radio all the way.

I have WINMOR capability. How do i participate in that group.

How do I initiate a message to people here or in my life through NTS?
#176
Excatly.

Here is my thoughts/rambling. The NTS system has a specific purpose that may or may not match our collective need for information, I envision a group of us with communication ability from all points of the US be able to disseminate situational assessments from our own corner of the US. Every week i send a winlink message to everyone in our group real data from my area such as weather and other factual items. This will get us in the habit of using the system and in time of actual need the system will be set up and ready to go.

I would personally advise staying away from technologically complicated options, like a computer, SD cards, etc. Complexity fails easily... Nothing beats paper and a pencil. Make sure you have enough of it, because it does run out.. Save paper as much as possible. I would avoid anything that uses power as much as possible, except for the radio of course, and that has to be low current.

Gil.

Excellent point.  I include pen and paper in each BOB.  A trip to Staples can cover a lot of communication and record keeping needs.

A rite in the rain notebook and pen is a great investment

Wow this is pretty amazing. I have a few buddies not ready to jump on the ham band wagon but this is going to be a great intro and at least i will be able to get messages out to them.

I do, but I don't have a full understanding of NTS and how it would apply to your goal.

Luck,
What was your original intention of starting Prepnet? I got your email about the NTS system but i think using Winlink amongst us here for sitreps or some other function has value and allows us to continue to use Winlink with a purpose.
Thanks,
Matt
