Post by: madball13 on July 20, 2015, 03:38:09 PM
Mail just went out.

Kits are for experienced builders only. Go get them boys.

Mine too!

Weber's email was sent at 3:02. I was late 35mins. Let's hope! I texted Ray immediately, he is sending his now...
I think there are only 100 kits available this time instead of 150.

BTW, I found that the Hammond 1590BB should make a great case for it. I even designed a FrontDesign cover for it, I'll attach the file here. They are expensive though, $50 for a one-off.

I'm going to adhere to the rules and stay out. I don't really want this to be my first kit with SMT's and since i haven't used my MTR-3b i'd feel bad having a an unused 3B and an un-built 5B while someone else with the knowledge and exp goes without.

What bands?

20/40m.

The MTR5B, I would set-up for 15/20/30/40/80m. I don't care for 17m, 30m is more important. 80m is important for NVIS at night. 15m for the shorter antenna. 20/40m of course because they are so popular.

I drove for 9 hrs today and then worked 3hrs, then went out to dinner with the work crew.  I get to my hotel and find I'm 3hrs late ;-(   I can live with my MRT_2 but I would really love the extra bands.  Fingers crossed that I didn't miss out.

With Gil's kind help, I sent in my e-mail and REALLY hope to get this!  I'll also dump one of the less useful upper bands (also likely 17m - too much "599" nonsense) and install 80m instead.  I've always found NVIS far more useful for a person who loves the outdoors than 'DX'. It's nice to be able to keep track of the price of a can of coffee in Thailand, but more interesting is chatting with friends while out in the mountains/desert (I'm in Utah) and knowing what is happening within that 'one-tank-of-gas range, if things go SPLAT!

Having a rig that draws 12 mA on receive - GLORIOUS!

de RadioRay ..._ ._

Ps. I work in a lab filled with SMT assembly & rework equipment, optics and etc. so, should I 'score' an MTR-5b, I'll likely build it in my after-work hours, but at work...

You'd think it was impossible! I heard 15mA.. Absolutely amazing, especially including an LCD. My MTR lasted a week of camping on eight AA cells, maybe 45mins of use per day, and that was burning 35mA. The batteries were not flat after those seven days.. 12-15mA would last a LOOOOONNNNNG time on any battery. Even a small solar panel with a voltage regulator and a capacitor could power the receiver.

If I get one, I think I might add a jack for an external rotary encoder. I'll also add a built-in touch keyer. I could add the rotary encoder to a matching battery box, maybe even with a small speaker and audio amplifier.

I'll attach photos of the prototype board.. Soldering the processor won't be easy, as always..

Looks like I missed out. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I sent my email 3hrs after the announcement.  I was too busy driving and not paying attention to my smart phone.

Oh well, maybe that god's way of telling me I need to build an mcHF.  Yeah, that's it.  I'm now on a mission from God 8) 8) (think Blues Brothers)

Well -

I missed on the MTR5b, but DID 'inherit' Gil's MTR2b, so that's very COOL!  This should be an excellent camp radio now that I am right on the junction of the high desert and the western slope of The Rockies (aka: The Wasatch Range).
