What?s your exercise or sport of choice?
« on: October 04, 2012, 10:17:44 AM »

I always told myself I couldn?t run, therefore I couldn?t run.  With a little prodding from my daughter, I started running this past January using the C25K program and to my surprise, I actually could run. If anyone has ever thought about running, I highly recommend using the C25K ( couch to 5k ) program.  I used RunDouble app on my phone.

Since then I?ve built up to 10k and after a injury setback due to worn sneakers, I?m back to training for a mini next month with my daughter.

Any other runners?

I think martial arts does kill tow birds with one stone.. I practice Systema, a Russian martial art. I also did P90X, which is great but very hard. I lost more than 20Lbs with it, but then didn't maintain it and lost the muscles. I am still 20+Lbs lighter though.

Exercise sport of choice is rucksack walking with rifle in hand.  When I'm feeling whiney, I do kettlebell stuff in the living room, and the old school calesthetic exercises with some weight.

Hiking.  Usually with boots and ankle weights.  I love being out in the hills and I'm lucky that there are some 5 minutes away.  After years away from the weights I dug them out of the basement and have start that again.  I'm past 50 so I'm taking it real slow so I don't piss off any joints.

I would like to take a self defense martial arts but I don?t have time or desire for years of training.

I?ve been looking at kettle balls, they interest me but I just don?t have the room.

It interesting that more preppers are not into physical fitness.

Gambrinus, go to russianmartialart.com and find the schools list... Systema takes months to get somewhat proficient, not years. There is nothing better in my opinion.

I liked they worked in a team at times. I signed up for more info incase a seminar is ever offered in Western Kansas. I did not see any fat people in the class - not sure if I would be a candidate at this time.

Systema is one of the rare martial arts where your physical fitness isn't a major issue. That's because you make your own Systema... There aren't many learned techniques. Moves are created on the fly. So, you train your brain to see opportunities and take advantage of them using body mechanics and movement. Here is one of the best instructors in the World, Mikhail Ryabko (the big guy):

He doesn't move a whole lot, but everything he does ends up being appropriate for the attack.

The problem with Systema videos is that they can look very goofy. However, when you're the one trying to attack one of these guys, everything you do ends up being wrong!
