Tactical Corner / Listening and Digital radio
March 04, 2026, 12:44:52 PM
I recently found I could hook my mini radio up to my computer and decode digital signals.  Here is a link:  https://youtube.com/shorts/4pyzAqtKzhI
In preparedness you must be ready to listen more than talk so you don't give your position away.  Using a simple receive ONLY radio will minimize the risk of accidentally transmitting a signal.  I left this setup running overnight to decode WSPR signals to test the effectiveness.  Worked great.  For receiving messages using JS8 or FLDIGI this method would work also.  Enjoy if you want.  72!!!

CB / CB isn't dead and this page isn't either!
March 04, 2026, 12:39:19 PM
I recently purchased a President George CB radio to replace a "Walmart" Cobra radio.  When I turned on the radio and hooked it to my Ham Radio antenna, through my tuner, I heard signals from all over the United States of America.  The George has AM, FM, USB, and LSB.  On channel 31 LSB I got contacts all over the place.  Channel 19 where I live, 10 miles from Interstate 20, is total noise with all the amplifiers everyone runs.  My interest is with other prepper minded people who don't want to be licensed with the FCC, amateur radio or GMRS.  Is there an interest here for CB radio??

General Discussion / Raspberry Pi update
December 13, 2022, 11:36:08 PM
I was trying to update my Raspberry Pi the other day.  It came back with a "you're running an out of date system" error.  I imaged a new micro SD card and inserted it.  Finally someone did something right.  Plug and play all the way through the setup.  Super fast also.  I took the old card and reimaged it for my other Pi.  I just have to get it running with the digirig and 817nd.

Morse Code / QRP DX
November 12, 2022, 09:25:23 AM
The last couple of days I have been camping in South Texas.  I am learning Morse Code and have been using it mainly with either my Yaesu FT-817 or the KX3.  With an endfed wire on my DX Commander pole I was talking easily to Hungary and Bulgaria.  My issue is my local EMMCOM wants WINLINK on 80 meters.  It is all well and good but if you are 'deployed' I can't see having the room for an 80 meter antenna.  Any suggestions??  It just amazes me that shack rats expect field rats to use 100 watts on WINLINK on 80 meters.
